A Beginner’s Guide to Caravan Hookups (Electric, Water, Waste)

If you’re new to caravanning, the idea of “hookups” can sound a little confusing. Don’t worry — once you’ve done it a couple of times, connecting your caravan is quick, simple, and makes your stay far more comfortable. At Batch Nurseries Touring Park in Somerset, all our hardstanding pitches come with electric hookups, and we’ve made it as easy as possible for you to get connected. Here’s our simple beginner’s guide.

Electric Hookup

Most modern caravans and motorhomes are fitted with a 240v system, which connects to the site’s electric supply via a hookup cable.

  • How to connect: Plug the cable into the site’s electric post first, then into your caravan.

  • Safety tip: Always make sure the switches are off before plugging in.

  • What you can run: Lights, kettles, TVs, chargers — but be mindful of the amperage limit (often 10A or 16A). Too many high-power appliances at once can trip the supply.

Water Supply

Some pitches have a direct water tap, while others use shared taps around the site.

  • How to connect: Fill your caravan’s fresh water container (such as an Aquaroll) and connect it to the pump that feeds your taps and shower.

  • Tip: Always use a food-grade hose for filling up, to keep the water clean and safe.

Waste Water

Your caravan will have a waste water outlet pipe that leads to a container (such as a Wastemaster).

  • How to manage: Empty the container regularly at the site’s designated waste water point.

  • Tip: Keep fresh and waste water containers separate and clearly labelled!

Chemical Toilet

If you’re using your caravan’s toilet, it will have a cassette system that needs emptying.

  • How to manage: Take the cassette to the chemical disposal point on site and rinse it thoroughly after emptying.

  • Tip: Only use approved caravan toilet chemicals – never household bleach.
